Breast reduction is the name of the surgery in which extra fat, tissue and skin is removed from the breasts in order to decrease their overall size. A lot of women suffer from neck or back pain due to the disproportionately large size of their breasts and this surgery provides the perfect relief from this problem. Large breasts can also cause other postural disorders, skin issues and may deform the skeletal system. After the surgery breasts can potentially grow slightly larger due to weight gain however they will never be as large as they were before the operation. So the patients can enjoy a lifelong aesthetic and health with their new breasts free from pain.
The surgery has no affect whatsoever on breastfeeding as it doesn’t deal with milk glands but targets extra fat and tissue.
• People with disproportionately large breasts
• People who suffer from back and neck pain due to large size of their breasts
• People who have postural or skeletal disorders due to large breasts
• People who have a hard time doing certain physical activities due to having large breasts
• People who suffer from low self-confidence due to a non-aesthetic look caused by having large breasts
The operation is performed under general anesthesia and takes around 2-5 hours to complete during which the patient is fully asleep. The doctors remove excess skin and fat tissue around the breasts to reduce the size. Sometimes the operation needs to be combined with a breast lift surgery in order to get rid of sagging as well. In this case sutures are used. Finally the areola that is also enlarged is reduced in size to match the proportions of the new size of the breasts.
Recovery takes a couple of weeks and varies from patient to patient but it safe to say that one might anticipate taking a full week off from daily activities such as going to work or school afterwards. Patients typically experience some restriction in their arm movement for a few days following the surgery. Relief from back and neck pain is almost instant after the surgery now that the extra weight causing problems is gone. Some scarring is normal after the procedure which depends entirely on the patient’s conditions and the techniques used however it is our aim to leave the patient with as little scarring as possible. This is usually achieved if the patient follows the post care instructions and the scarring becomes barely noticeable.
