Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as sleeve gastrectomy, involves the removal of a large part of the stomach so that the person feels full quicker on less amount of food. It is a weight loss surgery recommended for people who are obese or have health problems that is caused by excess weight.
The way the surgery works is by removing part of the stomach. The stomach produces a hormone called gherlin which causes a person to feel hunger. So a smaller stomach releases smaller amounts of gherlin so the patient doesn’t feel as much hunger.
The important thing here to note is that surgery alone is not the final answer to weight loss. The smaller sleeve of a stomach that is left after surgery, can stretch and expand again if the patient does not lead a healthy lifestyle. Therefore it is essential that this surgery be accompanied by exercise and diet in order to keep the weight off.
• People who are obese or have health problems due to obesity
• People who tried diet and exercise and can not lose weight
• People who tried medicines for weight loss but did not see results
This surgery is performed under general anesthesia in which the patient is fully asleep. The doctor will create a small sleeve in the stomach using a stapling device which will separate the sleeve from the larger amount of the stomach. The doctor will then remove the rest of the stomach so the patient will be left with a smaller pouch/sleeve that functions as the new stomach.
The new smaller stomach will hold about one fifth of the volume it held before causing the patient to feel that much less hunger and to feel full that much quicker.
This surgery will require downtime and a few nights of stay at our ITMT Group facilities.
Patients will be put on a liquid food diet for the next week or two after the surgery, then switch the soft food and then eventually to solid food. The stomach will be able to handle much less food than before so the meals would have be to smaller and drinking while eating will not be recommended.
Resuming daily life and work can start within a week or two post surgery depending on the patient.
