Rhinoplasty

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is perhaps the most common surgical procedures in the world today. It is used to reshape the nose whether it be changing the angle, making it smaller or bigger or altering the angle. The nose is a very important feature of the face as it sits in the middle and it effects the beauty of a person. With this surgery, any imperfections bothering the patient physchologically or creating health problems can be fixed. This contributed to the overall health and happiness of the patient.

Rhinoplasty is mostly performed in the inner part of the nose. Depending on the alterations that need to be made, the surgeon can cut into or the top of the nose with many different techniques. Bone and cartilage can be removed or added in order to give the patient the desired look. For example if the nose is too big then some cartilage and bones can be removed to make it smaller. And if the nose is too small, cartilage tissue can be added to make it bigger and mold it into the shape wanted.

Who can have Rhinoplasty?

• People that have health issues such as breathing problems, snoring, sleep apnea.
• People that are not happy with the way they nose look.
• People who suffer from psychological effects due to the aesthetic of their nose.
• People who had rhinoplasty surgery before but are not happy with the results whether it is health or pyshcology related.

How is Rhinoplasty performed?

Depending on the nose problem that a patient has, our doctors pick a specific technique. The operation can be simple rhinoplasty which doesn’t require general anesthesia and can be done very quickly at our facilities. This is usually the case for patients that want to alter the tip of their nose’s apperance. Rhinoplasty is the classic nose surgery in which the structure of the nose is altered. The doctors work on the bone and cartilage. Going into this operation, the patient’s age and gender are two important factors that must be taken into consideration. This is an operation that is usually performed under general anesthesia. A third option is called secondary rhinoplasty which is for patients that have received this surgery before but are not happy with the results. This can be due to sagging, difficulty in breathing or smelling or simply because of the fact that the patient is not happy with the way their nose looks.

In order to prevent this last option, we use 3D digital formatting to show the patient exactly how their nose will look like after the procedure. This provides them with psychological comfort going into surgery which can be stresful enough for many. It is important that you see the 3d digital simulation of your new nose and compare it to the previous one. This will give you an idea of how the nose will look with other features of your face as well.

It is important to note that every person has a very specific face with their own skin tone, complexion and features. Therefore we at the ITMT Group believe that each nose should be designed specific to each face. We take what the patient wants, what the patient needs and the story that the rest of the face tells into consideration when we design your new nose.

Rhinoplasty is performed under general or local anesthesia. The patient will most likely stay for one night at our facilities following the surgery and this period can be extended a few more nights depending on how complex the surgery is.

Post Rhinoplasty Recovery

Patients experience very little to no pain following the surgery since they come out under the influence of anesthesia and pain killers. After they feel good enough to be discharged, it is very important to follow the post care insturctions given by the doctors. You will feel limited in your breathing in the first few days after the surgery but it will get better once the swelling starts to go down. Swelling of the face and bruising around the eye is also very common.

Following a simple rhinoplasty, patients can return to normal life and daily activities immediately. For other types, bandages and splints (if used) will be removed in about one week. Swelling, redness, bruises are quite often. Our doctors will advise that you apply cold compresses to your face which will help bring the swelling and the bruises down. During the first few days after the surgery, patients will have to keep their head up and keep it as stable as possible while sleeping. Mild pain is also common which can be taken care of using mild pain killers.

If tampons or plasters are used, they removed within one two days after the surgery. Some patients can have stres around these however technology is advanced enough today it is possible to breathe through these tampons so you have nothing to worry about.

Patients can return to normal life within one week after the surgery. For tiresome activities such as running or weiht lifting it is advised that you wait a little longer. It is important that you keep your face safe from external factors such as sun and impacts. We advise our patients to use contact lenses instead of glasses at least for the first few weeks post surgery. It is important that you do not apply too much pressure on the bridge of the nose.

Please keep in mind that your new nose will take about 6 months to settle into its new shape. During this period you must be careful to protect it from impacts or while entering the sea or a pool.

Rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly performed surgeries in the world today with almost half a million people each year. Rise of the social media and people putting extra emphasis on how they look have surely contributed to this increase in demand. We live in a culture today that emposes perfectionism. With people taking and posting selfies so much more now then ever, the nose has become more and more imporent.

So in addition to health reasons, people’s own self esteem plays a huge rule in deciding for rhinoplasty.

Types of Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty can be performed for health or aesthetic reasons therefore there is a wide range of application and this causes differences in the styles and techniques ITMT Group Doctors use.

Functional Rhinoplasty

Functional rhinoplasty deals with physical anomalies that prevent breathing caused by congenital defects. It can also be used to correct the effects of physical trauma. It is made by reshaping and repositioning cartilage and nasal bones.

Depending on the severity of the issue, surgeons may make incision on the inside or outside of the nose. Either way the goal will be to leave minimum marks with maximum benefits.

Correction of Detected Septum

A septum is supposed to create two equal paths in the nose. But sometimes due to internal or external factos the septum can become deviated. It can become curved or travel to one side causing issues in breathing or appearance. Depending on the situation, the surgeon may have to reshape or remove the cartilage to fix the problem.

Nose Polyps

Nasal polyps are common in people with allergies. They can also be seen in irritated interior noses. This growth develops in the nasal passages in the form of soft capsules. They cause health and breathing problems and may need to be removed. In order to do so our ITMT Group doctors will reach into the nostril. Once the removal is done there is a high chance that these polyps will form again so they may need to be removed again.

Correction of Radix

Radium is the upper bone part of nose. For patients that have a large radium, the look of it can be aesthetically disturbing. Our surgeons can shave small bits of it to reduce the size. Or if the radium has been damaged by external factors, it can be healed by adding on cartilage.

Correcting the Bent Nose

Some patients have noses that are slightly curved or shifted to one side. This can be corrected by shaving off some bones or cartilages or by physiologically shifting the tissues.

Nose tip aesthetics

Some patients are not happy with the way the tip of their nose turn. A nose’s tip can turn down or up. It can be adjusted by reshaping the cartilage.

Nasolabial Angle Adjustment

When you look at your face from the profile, the nasolabial angle can be seen which consists of two lines: from the tip of the nose to the region above the upper lips and from the lower lip of the upper lip to the nostrils. Some patients may not be happy with this angle and this can be corrected with surgery. Surgeons aim to create a nasolabial angle of 90 to 95 degrees in male patients and an angle of 100 to 105 degrees in female patients in most cases.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty

There are certain nose shapes that are associated with different ethnicities and some patients may prefer to alter the nose comes with featured of their ethnicity. This is very common with races with wide noses or for patients of African and Asian descent with wide nostrils.
